ENGL 210 - Myth and Folklore Credits: 5 LEC hours per week: 5 Examines the myths and folktales of the world with an emphasis on literature and culture. Course taken prior to fall 2010 also accepted for diversity requirement. Formerly: LIT 210. Course Outcomes:
- Examine the function of narrative, oral and written, and how it affects our lives.
- Compare and contrast various elements in stories to identify the motifs that continue to repeat themselves in myth and folklore, such as symbolism, cyclical structure, and archetypal characters.
- Examine and debate issues that arise in at least one major mythic classic, such as The Iliad or The Odyssey.
- Interpret and analyze values from a significant tale of a foreign mythology, such as from India, Japan, Island Cultures, or Native American sources.
- Compare and analyze specific folklore beliefs in the context of the dominant mythology.
- Evaluate through discussion and writing how much mythic constructs have affected our lives.
