HPER 268 - Diversity In Sports Credits: 5 LEC hours per week: 5 This course will examine diversity issues in the sporting world from the 1930’s to present day. Topics will include athletes that have overcome social biases such as race, gender, religion and disability in the context of the Olympics, Special Olympics, Paralympics, NCAA and professional sports. This course counts an elective and diversity credit toward the AA degree, not as an activity course. Course Outcomes:
- Articulate the key ways in which sports and society intersect.
- Summarize major diversity stories associated withthe Olympics since 1936.
- Identify movies and films with diversity in sports themes and analyze their historical accuracy.
- Identify athletes and teams that have broken down barriers and describe their immediate and long term impact on society.
- Identify examples of diversity in sports.

- The color line in baseball and basketball
- Women in sports
- Latin American influence on baseball
- Samoan influence in football

- Performance enhancing drugs and cheating in sports
