HSC 090 - High School to College Transition


Credits: 2.5
LEC hours per week: 2.500
This course allows students to develop and demonstrate strategies to adjust to the college experience, to develop a better understanding of the learning process, learn about programs and pathways available on campus, understand current abilities, characteristics, learning styles and readiness to learn, and to acquire essential academic survival skills as students transition from the high school to the college environment. Students will explore personal, academic and employment history to begin to develop their High School and Beyond Plan and career exploration as part of the Washington State high school graduation requirements. This course includes orientation to the Alternative Education program, its resources and services, completion of required assessment, an orientation to the advising process, individualized case management services and support.
Course Outcomes:
  • Develop familiarity of campus and campus resources.
  • Demonstrate understanding of program policies and student responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate ability to develop personal and academic goals.
  • Analyze habits and behaviors of successful students vs. struggling students.
  • Identify and evaluate personal strengths and weaknesses to develop personal success plans for all areas of life.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of academic pathways available at WWCC and transfer colleges and additional steps to further explore pathways.
  • Understand employment training and job resources available in the community.
  • Understand the academic demands of college classes.
  • Complete required assessments.
  • Identify and communicate with program staff.

  1. Career research and exploration (Career Coach, WOIS, Career Bridge, job shadow).
  2. Personality inventories & career relevance (WOIS, Myers-Briggs).
  3. Demystifying the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  4. Accuplacer, CASAs, other Assessments, SAT and ACT preparation.
  5. Service learning — community mentoring & leadership.
  6. College admission process and criteria.
  7. College and secondary institution research.
  8. Financial Planning, scholarships, and how to afford college.
  9. Presentation technology (Prezi, Power Point, etc.)
  10. Navigating and using WWCC’s online course student interface (CANVAS).
  11. College information systems (Degree Audit, degree and program guides, e-schedule, Transfer website, Student Portal, Financial Aid Portal).
  12. Educational planning
