HSC 080 - Reading Fundamentals

This course offers skill development in reading with a variety of reading comprehension strategies in a range of fiction and nonfiction works. Students will practice making text to self, text to world, and text to text connections. An emphasis will be placed on summarizing and analyzing using textual evidence. This course prepares students for taking the Washington State High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE), required for graduation.
Course Outcomes:
  • Summarize and analyze fiction and non-fiction works using textual references.
  • Identify and activate reading comprehension strategies.
  • Practice released samples of the High School Proficiency Examination (HSPE), a test required for graduation in Washington State.
Course Topics:
  1. Summarizing and analyzing fiction and nonfiction works using textual references.
  2. Text to self, text to world and text to text connections.
  3. Questioning before, during and after reading.
  4. Creating mental images while reading.
  5. The introduction of these strategies will involve metacognitive work, where the instructor reads passages aloud, pausing to “show†students the comprehension strategies he/she is activating.
