HUM& 118 - Humanities III The Modern World

This course provides a basic survey of the major artistic, literary, and cultural achievements of the 20th and 21st centuries, with emphasis on European and American achievement. We will look at the web of influence among politics, art, literature, music, religion, psychology and philosophy to assess how our current world was shaped over the last hundred years.
Course Outcomes:
  • Interpret evolving forms of modern art, architecture, literature, and music to derive specific meanings and overarching themese.
  • Evaluate the interpretation of critics.
  • Analyze a wide selection of cultural, literacy, artistic and musical expression in the modern world.
  • Evaluate the impact of various technological, political, economic, and cultural influences on the creative work of the modern era.
  • Critique culturally and linguistically diverse works in literature, philosophy, and the arts, including the film and music of the modern period.
Course Topics:
  1. The shift in power from aristocracy to “We the people”
  2. Inventions (perhaps like photography, portable oil paints, film, recorded sound, or psychotherapy)and their effect on society and other art forms
  3. The century of world wars and their effect on gender roles, fashion, environmental awareness, art, and literature
