HVACR 131 - Principles of Electricity Theory Credits: 5 LAB hours per week: 7.500 Introduction to electrical theory and terminology, electrical safety, direct current (DC), electrical energy sources, conductors, resistance, circuit types, ohm’s law, circuit calculations and measuring instruments, magnetism, alternating current (AC) single and three phase generation and circuits, and introduction to the National Electrical Code. Course Outcomes:
- Summarize electron theory and Ohm’s law used in electrical industries.
- Use basic electrical safety rules in the classroom, labs, campus projects, and off-site work.
- Compare and contrast the sources for electrical energy.
- Explain the differences between conductors and insulators.
- Describe magnets, magnetic fields, electromagnetism, and magnetic induction.
- Evaluate a circuit using a resistor code then measure circuit to determine if it is within tolerance.
- Calculate power factor and values in a resistive inductive (RL)circuit.
- Calculate series, parallel, and combination electrical circuits.
- Use of Digital Multimeters to measure circuits.
- Select conductor sizes using insulation ratings by application and National Electric Code ® standards.
- Describe single and three phase power.
- Explain capacitive inductive (CL) resistive AC circuits.
- Explain inductance and compute inductive reactance.
- Compute peak, RMS, and average voltage and current in AC.
