IELP 076 - IELP Listening and Speaking II

This is an academic Listening and speaking course for non-native speakers of English in Level 4 of the Intensive English Language program (IELP). In this course, students will improve listening and speaking skills by engaging with classmates, instructor, and course materials. students will practice the language necessary for gathering information from a variety of sources, analyzing it, connecting it to personal knowledge, and logically supporting their opinions with accurate language. This course includes daily discussions, assignments, quizzes, and tests and is in accordance with College and Career Readiness standards for Adult Educational Level C.
Course Outcomes:
  • Apply conversational skills in order to participate in a rarnge of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners.
  • Evaluate the speaker’s intention/purpose and opinion.
  • Identify the central ideas, key words, and’ supporting details of a lecture, presentation, listening, etc.
  • Synthesize their own personal experience with information gained from classmates, lectures, presentations, etc.
  • Utilize multimedia components (e.9. graphics, sound) and visual displays in presentations to enhance the development of main ideas or themes.
  • Apply techniques to identify and correct individual pronunciation issues.
  • Use proper question formation/word order when asking and answering questions.
  • Use pronouns and possessive adjectives, count and non-count nouns, basic quantifiers, comparative and superlative forms, and prepositions that express time and place.
  • Use action and non-action verbs, basic verb tenses, modal auxiliaries, phrasal verbs, and gerunds/infinities.
  • Apply techniques to improve overall speaking skills, e.g. clarity and appropriate pace, volume, intonation, tone, and body language.
