IELP 068 - Beginning Reading Improvement


Credits: 1-5
LEC hours per week: 5
This course is created for international students and focuses on developing an understanding of the reading process and appreciation for the importance of reading for pleasure, personal growth, and academic success. Encourages and supports improvement of reading strategies to improve comprehension, critical thinking, and reading efficiency to better meet career and college reading demands. Students will be assessed at a level B of the CCRS.
Course Outcomes:
  • Explain the reading process
  • Apply reading strategies and monitory comprehension
  • Formulate judgments utilizing critical thinking skills to determine the author’s purpose
  • Paraphrase and summarize material from reading
  • Organize information using strategies such as classification, categorization, and comparison/contrast
  • Use a wide range of strategies to guide reading of long texts.
