IELP 050 - IELP Advanced Reading


Credits: 1-5
LEC hours per week: 5
This class develops reading techniques for Level 5 IELP students through focusing on the reading of pre-college textbooks and academic discussion of literature. This course helps to improve comprehension skills, critical reading skills and application of reading strategies used to increase comprehension. Students will be expected to analyze and synthesize materials at an appropriate reading speed as well as formulate critical judgments of readings. Daily discussions, outside readings, written assignments and examinations are required. This course is in accordance with College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education.
Course Outcomes:
  • Explain the reading process.
  • Apply reading strategies and monitor comprehension.
  • Utilize critical thinking skills to determine the author’s purpose and formulate judgments.
  • Paraphrase and summarize material from reading.
  • Organize and analyze information and reflect upon meaning using strategies such as classification, categorization, and comparison/contrast.
  • Use a wide range of strategies to guide reading of long texts.
  • Students will show a proficiency at level D in Reading based on the Career and College Readiness standards anchors 1,2,5,6,7,9, and 10 (use reading rubric to determine competency).
  • Students will show proficiency at Level D in Writing based on the Career and College Readiness standards anchors 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 ,8, and 9 (use writing rubric to determine competency).
