IELP 036 - IELP Listening and Speaking: Low-Beginner


Credits: 1-5

In this course, students in the Intensive English Language Program (IELP) will improve their ability to communicate in English in personal, social, and academic environments. Upon successful completion of the course, the successful student will achieve speaking, listening, and language anchors level A informed by the College Career and Readiness Standards for Adult Education produced by the U.S. Department of Education Office of Vocational and Adult Education.
Course Outcomes:
  • Identify the main topic in oral presentations and simple spoken and written texts.
  • Retell a few key details in oral presentations and simple spoken and written texts.
  • Retell a short sequence of events in order with support.
  • Participate in short conversations about familiar topics and texts.
  • Take turns in interactions with others.
  • Respond to simple questions and wh-questions (what, when, where, who, whom, which, whose, why, and how).
  • Deliver short oral presentations.
  • Adapt language choices to task and audience with emerging control in various social and academic contexts.
  • Begin to use frequently occurring general academic and content-specific words.
  • Use common linking words to connect events and ideas.
  • Use frequently occurring verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, and conjunctions with support.
  • Produce simple and compound sentences.
Course Topics:
  1. Topics are selected using College Career and Readiness Standards (CCRS) for Speaking and Listening; Phonics review, intonation, stress, and articulation are taught using short stories, dialogue, songs, and plays.
