IELP 026 - IELP Listening & Speaking Foundations Credits: 1-5 LEC hours per week: 5 This is a foundational Listening and Speaking course for non-native speakers of English in the Intensive English Language Program (IELP). In this course, students will improve basic listening and speaking skills in English by engaging with classmates, instructor, and course materials. Course Outcomes:
- Pronounce basic sounds and words in English.
- Produce foundational English intonation patterns (yes/no questions, WH-questions, statements).
- Respond to simple yes/no questions and some wh-questions (what, when, where, who, whom, which, whose, why, and how).
- Follow spoken short-sentence instructions.
- Show emerging awareness of differences between informal and formal language use.
- Actively listen to others.
- With support, communicate information and feelings about familiar topics and experiences.
- Relying heavily on context, questioning, and knowledge of morphology in their native language(s), identify the meaning of a few frequently occurring words, simple phrases, and formulaic expressions in oral communications and simple spoken and written texts.
- Produce a narrow range of vocabulary and syntactically simple sentences.
- With support, use a small number of frequently occurring nouns, noun phrases, verbs, conjunctions, and prepositions.

- Letters, numbers, times, colors, body parts, places, directions
- Situational practices such as shopping at a grocery store, ordering at a restaurant, visiting the doctor, etc.
- Interviewing classmates
- Non-verbal behavior
- Greetings and introductions
- Common small talk
