IRR 221 - Pump Applications

Credits: 2
LEC hours per week: 1
LAB hours per week: 2
This course will explore pump types, including the characteristics and selection and use of positive and non-positive displacement pumps. Students will learn how to interpret and use pump and system curves and how to evaluate, interpret and apply Net Positive Suction Head characteristics to suction side design. Formerly: WTM 221.
Course Outcomes:
  • Identify pump classes and types and piping materials and fittings.
  • Select pumps based on piping system dynamics, process fluid density, and affinity laws.
  • Describe pump components such as packing, impellers, and mechanical seals.
  • Describe industry standard pump maintenance procedures.
  • Use and interpret pump and system curves.
  • Evaluate net pressure suction head (NPSH) characteristics.
  • Interpret NPSH criteria.
  • Apply NPSH criteria to suction side design.
  • Analyze series and parallel pumping applications.
Course Topics:
  1. Pump types and classes.
  2. Pump hydraulics.
  3. Pump curves.
  4. Net positive suction head (NPSH).
  5. Suction side characteristics.
  6. Maintenance and troubleshooting.
  7. Suction side design.
  8. Series and parallel pumping.
  9. Affinity laws of centrifugal pumps.
  10. Piping systems.
