MATH& 142 - Precalculus II

Credits: 5
LEC hours per week: 5
MATH& 142 is the second in a series of two courses designed to give students an in-depth understanding of functions and to prepare students for calculus. Graphical analysis of concepts is emphasized through the use of technology.
Prerequisite(s): Grade of C- or higher in MATH& 141 , satisfactory placement, or permission of the Mathematics Department.
Course Outcomes:
  • Analyze sine, cosine, tangent, cosecant, arcsine, arcosine, and arctangent functions.
    • Identify domain and range.
    • Generate and interpret graphs.
    • Describe defining characteristics.
    • Explain the relationship to the unit circle.
    • Explain the relationship to the right triangle.
  • Combine trigonometric functions using addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and composition.
  • Analyze transformations resulting from the application of shifts and scales.
  • Solve equations and inequalities involving trigonometric expressions through analytic and graphical techniques.
  • Apply the Law of Sines and Law of Cosines to oblique triangles.
  • Use trigonometric identities to rewrite expressions, verify additional identities, and solve equations.
  • Construct appropriate trigonometric functions to model and solve contextual problems.
  • Relate two-dimensional vectors to right triangle trigonometry.
  • Interpret parametric equations analytically and graphically.
  • Analyze and graph polar equations; demonstrate the ability to convert between polar and Cartesian coordinates.
  • Optional: identify, analyze, and apply conic sections.
