PHIL 140 - Ethics and Policy In Healthcare I Credits: 1 LEC hours per week: 1 Explores values, ethics, and legal decision-making frameworks and policies used to support the well-being of people and groups within the context of the healthcare professions. Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Nursing Program. Corequisite(s): NURS 100 and NURS 110 or instructor permission. Course Outcomes:
- Determine the quality of published health related resources (written and electronic) available for use by healthcare providers and consumers.
- Evaluate the historical infulences on our current healthcare system and healthcare professions.
- Summarize a structured method for ethical decision making.
- Analyze an ethical situation in healthcare using Deontological (“Duty based”) and Telelogical (“Consequence based”) moral frameworks.
- Evaluate the legal concepts relevant to healthcare provider practice: standards of care, negligence and malpractice, civil and criminal action, information privacy, informed consent, advance healthcare directives.
- Discuss ways in which ineffective interperosnal and interprofessional communication result in harm to healthcare consumers.
