WELD 296 - Welding Skill Development II


Credits: 1-17
LAB hours per week: 34
This course is a continuance of WELD 196 , designed to provide students variable lab time and credits to meet individual requirements. A contract is developed with instructor to meet the student’s needs. Grades and credits are assigned according to contract specifications and student accomplishments.
Course Outcomes:
  • Apply safe cylinder handling, SMAW, and GTAW equipment practices.
  • Demonstrate proper set up, adjustment, and closing practices for joining and cutting steel materials.
  • Interpret shop drawings or prints to construct welding objective assemblies.
  • Identify and apply the correct process to assigned welding tasks.
  • Evaluate final weld assembly according to AWS standards in publication D1.1.
  • Complete qualification tests.
Course Topics:
  1. Use and care for fuel gas welding and cutting apparatuses.
  2. Portable and shop welding systems, grinders, vices, clamps, drills, files, air-driven tools, punches, shears, and breaks.
  3. Measuring tools and methods.
  4. Fabrication systems and material types.
  5. Students are expected to cut, prepare, and weld samples on steel plate and pipe, according to the specified lessons described on shop drawings.
  6. Shielded metal arc welding electrode types and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding applications.
  7. Pipe welding section of Print Reading textbook.
  8. Print reading and weld symbol principles.
