WELD 122 - Flux Core Arc Welding

Credits: 1-6
LAB hours per week: 12
Introduce students to welding safety, industry practices, and Flux Core Arc Welding in a laboratory setting. Students will learn, practice, and apply skills needed for the safe operation of both self-shielding, and dual shielded FCAW, including the selection of correct parts, tools, and polarities to operate each process. Students will prepare projects to weld using basic blueprint reading skills. Lab practice will be completed while employing professional, ethical, and safe welding shop behavior.
Corequisite(s): Student is required to enroll in WELD 102  , WELD 112 , and WELD 122 .
Course Outcomes:
  • Demonstrate how to properly assemble, and prepare a Flux Core welder and how to thread the electrode through the system and the cleaning of the gun nozzle and changing wire liner.
  • Describe and demonstrate the effects of changing the welding gun angle from Backhand, Perpendicular to Forehand - advantages & disadvantages.
  • Demonstrate proper travel speeds and all other settings in FCAW.
  • Demonstrate how to properly make flux core welds in lap joint, butt joint and tee joints in all positions that can pass the specified standard.
  • Visual inspection of Flux Core Arc welds to AWS Dl.1 Weld Standards.
Course Topics:
  1. lntroduction to Flux Core Arc Welding.
  2. Understanding the power source & DCEN/DCEP when using FCAW.
  3. Advantages of FCAW and its limitations.
  4. Understanding the different modes of metaltransfer.
  5. The effects of electrode extension on FCAW.
