The AAS Certificate builds on the principles of the advanced certificate providing students with a deeper understanding of air conditioning, ventilation, heating systems, controls, and includes advanced commercial refrigeration, and capstone project. Students prepare for entry-level employment in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration industry including energy management systems. The technical skills and knowledge acquired in this program will also provide students with troubleshooting and mechanical skills necessary to service, repair and install equipment in these areas.
Graduates of the HVACR Certificate will enter the workforce with a knowledge base and solid skillset, making them attractive potential employees for HVAC companies. They will have the necessary skills to recover, evacuate and recharge air conditioning equipment, and safely perform electrical and mechanical troubleshooting. Students who complete the AAS will also earn their EPA 608 refrigerant handler’s card.
Degree Outcomes:
- Take part in troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing/replacing wiring and mechanical equipment safely while using testing devices and power tools.
- Apply knowledge of electrical safety, theory, vocabulary, and calculations of series, parallel, and combination circuits involving direct and alternating current.
- Utilize knowledge of capacitors, resistive-inductive-capacitive reactance circuits, single and three-phase transformers, DC generators and motors, three-phase alternators, and single and three-phase motors.
- Interpret schematics, install wire, and test various types of electrical circuits.
- Model proper safety procedures for working with rotating machinery, moving heavy objects, pressurized vessels and systems, chemicals, ladders and energy; electrical, heat, cold, fluid. Explain solid state components and devices.
- Analyze the refrigeration cycle and the scientific principles behind it; take part in the diagnosing and repair of HVAC and refrigeration systems, domestic and commercial.
Transferability: The AAS Degree is designed for students planning to enter their chosen career upon graduation. Often only selected credits are considered transferable to public or private baccalaureate institutions.
