CAP 077 - Writing Essentials II


Credits: 1-5
This course focuses on the composition of well-developed sentences, paragraphs, and the writing process. Students learn the basics of sentence structure, informative, and narrative writing. Instructors will use the Career and College Readiness Standards level B to evaluate competencies and ensure developmental progression.
Course Outcomes:
  1. Apply writing Process concepts.
  2. Create organized,unified, coherent and well-developed paragraphs and short essays.
  3. Demonstrate clarity in writing through good grammar, punctuation, spelling, and manuscript skills in paragraphs.
  4. Use academic writing style in voice, wording, and sentence construction.
  5. Interpret short, college-level texts for key ideas with assistance.
  6. Use basic information literacy skills, research outside’sources, and avoid plagiarism.
  7. Manage the academic demands of college classes independently.

Course Topics:
  1. The writing process and understanding the WWCC writing rubric
  2. Establishing academic tone in writing
  3. Reading for the main idea, annotating texts, creating evidence-based claims and summaries
  4. Finding and employing outside sources as well as simple formatting of in-text citations
  5. Structuring both the paragraph and the essay as well as employing patterns of organization
  6. Review of grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation
  7. Working with writing modes (narrative, expository/argumentative, persuasive)
