CHEM& 121 - Introduction to Chemistry Credits: 5 This course provides a fundamental survey of inorganic chemistry and is intended for nursing and health science majors in fulfillment of the lab science requirements. Topics include atomic structure, bonding, periodicity, stoichiometry, gases, equilibrium, solution chemistry, acids, bases, and buffers. Course Outcomes:
- Identify and differentiate major chemical categories, including states of matter, metals vs. nonmetals, ionic vs. covalent compounds, solutes vs. solvents, and acids vs. bases.
- Apply chemistry specific problem-solving skills using scientific units, gas laws, stoichiometry, solution concentration, thermodynamics, kinetics, chemical equilibrium, and pH.
- Describe the structure of the atom, including subatomic particles and their properties, and explain the arrangement and trends of the periodic table based on electron arrangement.
- Identify major classes of chemical reactions, including synthesis, decomposition, displacement, metathesis, combustion, oxidation-reduction, and neutralization reactions.
- Predict the molecular shape, polarity, and solubility of simple molecules using Lewis structure and VSEPR theory.
- Evaluate laboratory data and methods using safe laboratory practices and assess the precision, accuracy, and reliability of experimental results.
