CMST& 220 - Public Speaking

Develops students’ competency in planning, preparing, presenting, and evaluating basic speeches.
Course Outcomes:
 
  1. Recognize the many causes of speech anxiety and determine ways to conquer or reduce related apprehensions.
  2. Model the important role of a respectful and supportive audience member.
  3. Utilize appropriate listening techniques.
  4. Describe the ethics of public speaking.
  5. Determine the importance of appropriate, thoughtful, and correct word choice and language in oral presentations.
  6. Design a successful speech from outline to delivery.
  7. Employ verbal and non-verbal skills essential for a public speaker.
  8. Evaluate public speaking skills in self and others.

  3. Selecting a topic and purpose.
  4. Gathering materials.
  5. Organizing the body of the speech.
  6. Introduction and conclusion of the speech.
  7. Verbal and nonverbal delivery skills.

  9. Dealing with speech anxiety.
