ECE 255 - Children At Risk


Credits: 3
Methods of teaching dysregulated children. Focus on Adverse Childhood Experiences, resilience, brain development, child development, stress, and empowering children with self-regulation skills.
Course Outcomes:
  1. Recognize and manage how their own values may distort perceptions and lessen effectiveness in working with children and families affected by Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).
  2. Compare and contrast the needs all children share with what ACEs may look like and what impact it may have on individual children.
  3. Apply theories of brain development to children with ACEs.
  4. Identify: physical, intellectual, language, social, emotional and medical consequences of stress on the development of children with ACEs.
  5. Adapt the educational settings for children affected by ACEs.
  6. Make use of the nurturing teacher’s attitude Versus the discipline model in creating a positive, stable environment for children.
  7. Explain the teacher’s obligation to report suspected child abuse and neglect.
  8. Design a support plan for a dysregulated child.
