HSC 044 - College Preparation Chemistry

Credits: 1-5
This course studies matter’s composition, structure, and properties and how matter changes. Credit can be earned for only one of these courses: HSC 044 or CAP 044 .
Course Outcomes:
  1. Understand basic chemistry.
  2. Predict the relative properties of elements based on the periodic table and the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms.
  3. Construct and revise an explanation for the outcome of a simple chemical reaction based on the outermost electron states of atoms, trends in the periodic table, and knowledge of the patterns of chemical properties.
  4. Plan and investigate to gather evidence to compare the structure of substances at the bulk scale to infer the strength of electrical forces between particles.
  5. Develop a model to illustrate that the release or absorption of energy from a chemical reaction system depends upon the changes in total bond energy.
  6. Apply scientific principles and evidence to explain how changing the temperature or concentration of the reacting particles affects the rate at which a reaction occurs
  7. Refine the design of a chemical system by specifying a change in conditions that would produce increased amounts of products at equilibrium.
  8. Use mathematical representations to support the claim that atoms and mass are conserved during a chemical reaction.
  9. Develop models to illustrate the changes in the composition of the nucleus of the atom and the energy released during the processes of fission, fusion, and radioactive decay.

Course Topics:

  1. Elements, compounds, mixtures
  2. States of matter
  3. Periodic table of elements
  4. Atomic structure of elements
  5. Electron dot notation, formulas and equations
  6. Acids and bases
  7. Radioactive Isotopes and nuclear processes
  8. Chemical reactions
