MATH 075 - Elementary Algebra

Credits: 5
MATH 075 exposes students to positive integer exponents, operations on polynomial expressions, expressions and equations involving square roots, and linear and quadratic equations. The course focuses on graphing two-variable linear and quadratic equations and on solving problems using linear equations, quadratic equations, and systems of linear equations.
Course Outcomes:
  1. Interpret properties of lines and parabolas.
  2. Graph linear and quadratic equations.
  3. Generate an equation of a line given sufficient defining characteristics.
  4. Solve problems of two linear equations in two unknowns.
  5. Use systems of two linear equations in two unknowns to model and solve problems.
  6. Add, subtract, multiply, and simplify polynomial expressions.
  7. Simplify expressions involving positive integer exponents.
  8. Simplify square root expressions and solve square root equations.
  9. Factor monic trinomials.
  10. Convert from standard form to vertex form of a quadratic equation.
  11. Solve quadratic equations by factoring and using the quadratic formula.
  12. Use a scientific calculator when necessary.

Course Topics:
  1. Points, lines, and parabolas.
  2. Slopes, intercepts, and distance.
  3. Equations of lines.
  4. Systems of two linear equations in two unknowns.
  5. Operations on polynomials.
