MATH 071 - Pre-Algebra

Credits: 5
MATH 071 exposes students to proportional reasoning and the use of appropriate formulae to model and solve problems. The course emphasizes properties of equality to solve linear equations in one variable and solve a formula for a given variable.
Course Outcomes:
  1. Solve problems by setting up proportions and solving for unknowns.
  2. Convert measurements from one set of units to another when given conversion factors.
  3. Translate between simple word phrases and mathematical notation.
  4. Convert between percents, decimals, and fractions.
  5. Evaluate appropriate formulae when given a formula list.
  6. Solve one-variable linear equations.
  7. Solve a multivariable equation or formula for a given variable.
  8. Compute using absolute value and solve simple linear equations involving the absolute value.
  9. Use one-variable linear inequalities.
  10. Use a scientific calculator when necessary.

Course Topics:
  1. Proportions.
  2. Measurement conversion.
  3. Translation from word phrases to mathematical notation.
  4. Percent/decimal/fraction conversion.
  5. Modeling with percentages.
  6. Use of formulae.
  7. Solving one-variable linear equations, linear inequalities, and absolute value equations.
