MATH& 146 - Introduction to Statistics


Credits: 5
Study of both descriptive and inferential statistics. Topics include data presentation and analysis, measures of central tendency and dispersion, sampling distributions, parameter estimation, hypothesis testing, and linear regression.
Course Outcomes:
 

  1. Interpret values and draw conclusions from data using appropriate technology.
  2. Construct graphical displays to organize data and illustrate relationships.
  3. Examine data sets and graphical displays and summarize using appropriate numerical measures.
  4. Compute and analyze probabilities.
  5. Construct confidence intervals for population parameters and generate conclusions.
  6. Perform hypothesis tests and justify conclusions.

Course Topics:
 

  1. Summarizing data: measures of center, variation, relative standing, variance, and standard deviation.
  2. Graphing data: histograms, boxplots, stem-and-leaf plots, and frequency distributions.
  3. Calculating probability: Addition Rule, Multiplication Rule.
  4. Utilizing normal probability distributions: quartiles, z-scores, percentiles, Central Limit Theorem and t-distributions.
  5. Confidence intervals: estimating population proportions and means involving one and two samples or matched pairs.
  6. Hypothesis testing: finding P-values and writing conclusions for claims about means, proportions, and linear correlation.
  7. Interpreting correlation and writing regression equations (scatterplots, correlation coefficient, residuals, least-squares property).
  8. Performing chi-square test for goodness of fit.
