LIB 101 - Learning and Research for The 21st Century Credits: 2 Students will develop practical, hands-on fluency with library resources, other online tools/resources, and information literacy, including appropriate tool/resource selection, keyword development, and leveraging organizational and citation tools offered by a resource. They will gain an understanding of the research process and their role as learners and information consumers to enrich their lives, academic goals, and careers. This course is for those who want an introduction to information resources and research skills. Course Outcomes:
- Apply critical and creative thinking when engaging in research and sharing their findings.
- Use library-based and web resources to locate and evaluate a resource using a variety of criteria in order to determine whether it meets their informationneed.
- Evaluate sources using a variety of criteria in order to cultivate a skeptical stance and a self-awareness of their own biases and world-views.
- Explain the value of citing sources in order to effectively.
- Use information sources in their writing and other deliverables as appropriate.
- Apply an iterative process to ongoing inquiries.
- Employ metacognition to gain insight into their existing learning habits.
- Identify information gaps in order to formulate research questions.
- Chose a variety of resources in order to address the various perspectives on an issue.
- Employ appropriate review techniques in evaluating a peer’s work.
Course Topics:
- Asking researchable questions
- Recognizing information need
- Locating sources using a variety of library and online tools to meet information need
- Applying evaluation strategies to determine source credibility (i.e. fake news? Popular vs. Scholarly sources)
- Strategies and tools for organizing resources
- Synthesizing findings
- Avoiding plagiarism
- Presenting findings
