EV 296 - Wine Business Practicum I


Credits: 2-12
Students experience hands-on learning while working at a selected wine business or winery and receiving supervision from an experienced wine industry professional. 
Course Outcomes:
  1. Describe the  wine industry’s structure, including production, distribution, and retail channels. 
  2. Identify key trends, challenges, and opportunities within the global and local wine markets. 
  3. Apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings such as wineries, wine retailers, distributors, or suppliers, gaining hands-on experience in various aspects of the business. 
  4. Create exceptional customer experiences in wine tasting rooms, restaurants, wine businesses, and events. 
  5. Demonstrate skills in customer service and hospitality, with a focus on educating consumers about wine varieties, production methods, and pairings or wine industry products. 
  6. Demonstrate proficiency in sales techniques, including customer engagement, negotiation, and relationship building. 
  7. Develop and evaluate distribution strategies, including managing distributor relationships, logistics, and inventory control. 
  8. Develop marketing strategies that align with wine industry standards, focusing on product positioning, pricing, promotion, and customer targeting. 

Course Topics:
  1. Wine Industry Ecosystem - Describe the structure of the wine industry, including the interplay of production, distribution, and retail channels. Understand key stakeholders and their roles in global and local contexts. 
  2. Market Trends and Challenges - Document current trends, challenges, and opportunities in the wine industry. Evaluate data and case studies to forecast market developments and guide strategic decision-making. 
  3. Hands-On Winery Operations - Engage in practical experiences within wineries, gaining exposure to production methods, cellar operations, and quality control processes. 
  4. Customer Experience Design - Evaluate strategies for creating exceptional customer experiences in tasting rooms, restaurants, and events. Incorporate sensory analysis and storytelling techniques to elevate customer engagement. 
  5. Wine Education and Hospitality - Practice skills in educating consumers and business partners about wine varieties, production methods, pairing principles, and industry products. Emphasize communication and cultural awareness. 
  6. Sales and Relationship Management - Practice sales techniques, including effective customer engagement, negotiation, and relationship-building strategies tailored to the wine industry. 
  7. Distribution and Logistics - Describe distribution strategies, including managing distributor relationships, inventory control, and logistics. Gain hands-on experience with supply chain management tools and practices. 
  8. Marketing in the Wine Industry - Plan marketing strategies aligned with wine industry standards. Focus on product positioning, pricing strategies, digital marketing, and promotional activities. 
  9. Event Planning and Execution - Plan and participate in wine-related events such as tastings, festivals, and industry expos. Learn project management skills and the logistical elements of successful events. 
  10. Internship Project and Portfolio Development - Complete a capstone project based on the internship experience, demonstrating the integration of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Create a professional portfolio showcasing work samples, achievements, and reflections.
