CHEM& 261 - Organic Chemistry I with Lab

Credits: 5
This course is the first course of a three-quarter organic chemistry sequence with lab intended for science majors or student pursuing professional health-science related careers. Topics include organic nomenclature, physical properties and reactions of alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes, functional groups, conformational isomers, constitutional isomers, and stereoisomers.
Course Outcomes:

  1. Apply appropriate language and IUPAC conventions to describe the elemental composition, chemical bonding and molecular geometries present in organic compounds.
  2. Describe and identify the nature of individual chemical bonds within organic compounds in terms of their strength and polarity and the implications of those for the chemical and physical properties of the compounds.
  3. Utilize hybridization and resonance concepts to describe the bonding and bond geometries about atoms in organic compounds and the implications on reactivity.
  4. Identify and predict the ways acid-base and oxidation-reduction reactions impact the nature and behavior of organic compounds.
  5. Analyze stereochemistry to predict within a molecule the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms, their stability and characteristics.
  6. Demonstrate basic laboratory synthesis, isolation and analysis techniques.
  7. Apply the foundational chemical concepts with respect to specific classes of organic molecules or functional groups, including but not limited to: alkanes, alkenes and alkynes.
