ESTE 104 - Principles of Electricity AC Application

Credits: 5
Provides a practical application of alternating current (AC) generation and operational circuits. Typical wiring practices of single and three phase wiring of plugs, receptacles, lighting, panel, disconnects, conduit, capacitors, power and control transformers, an introduction to DC generators and AC alternators.
Course Outcomes:
  1. Demonstrate the safe and proper use of tools and measuring instruments.
  2. Explain capacitive inductive (CL) resistive AC circuits.
  3. Explain the relationship of resistance, inductance and capacitance in an AC circuit.
  4. Calculate power factor and values in a resistive inductive (RL) circuit.
  5. Calculate capacitance and measure capacitors wired in series and parallel in circuits.
  6. Describe the basic construction of a transformer and distinguish between primary and secondary windings.
  7. Describe different types and operations of transformers.
  8. Analyze measurements of transformer winding outputs using turns ratio calculations.
  9. Describe single and three phase power.
  10. Compare and contrast single-phase and three-phase voltages.
  11. Connect a branch circuit to a panel breaker.
  12. Connect receptacles, single-pole, three-way, and four-way switches.
