MEDA 144 - Medical Office Administrative Procedures


Credits: 5
This course explores the flow of information in a medical office, specifically integrating the various Electronic Health Records (EHR). The students learn current technology applications that are used for patient records as well as processing other data. Students also explore typical office documents, financial records, insurance claims, and general recordkeeping.
Course Outcomes:
  1. Identify different types of electronic technology used in professional communication.
  2. Identify different types of appointment scheduling methods.
  3. Manage appointment schedule using established priorities.
  4. Identify critical information required for scheduling patient procedures and schedule a patient procedure.
  5. Identify the components of an Electronic Medical Record, Electonic Health Record, and Practice Management system.
  6. Input accurate billing in an electronic system.
  7. Recognize the purpose for routine maintenance of equipment.
  8. Identify steps involved in completing an inventory.
  9. Perform an inventory of supplies. 
  10. Identify the importance of data back-up.
  11. Define the following bookkeeping terms:
    • charges
    • payments
    • account receivable
    • accounts payable
    • adjustments
    • end of day reconciliation
  12. Perform account receivable procedures to patient accounts including posting:
    • charges
    • payments
    • adjustments
  13. Identify precautions for accepting the following types of payments:
    • cash
    • check
    • credit card
    • debit card
  14. Identify types of adjustments made to patient accounts including:
    • non-sufficient funds (NSF) check
    • collections agency transaction
    • credit balance
    • third party
  15. Identify and inform a patient of financial obligation for services rendered.
