MEDA 120 - Human Body Structure and Function in Health and Disease II


Credits: 5
This course is the second of two human structure and function courses in the Medical Assisting program, and it includes discussion of the anatomy and physiology of the endocrine system; the heart, circulation and blood vessels; and the respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems. Common diagnostic tests and treatments for common disease processes are included.
Course Outcomes:
  1. Identify the circulatory, digestive, endocrine, integumentary, reproductive, respiratory, and urinary systems of the body.
  2. For the circulatory, digestive, endocrine, integumentary, reproductive, respiratory, and urinary systems of the body, identify:
    • the major organs and their anatomical location in each system
    • the normal function of each system; and
    • common pathology related to each body system, including signs, symptoms, etiology, diagnostic measures, and treatment modalities
    • medical terms and abbreviations
  3. Identify the structure and function of the human body over the life span.
  4. Identify dietary nutrients including:
    • carbohydrates
    • fat
    • protein
    • minerals
    • electrolytes
    • vitamins
    • fiber
    • water
  5. Identify the function of dietary supplements.
  6. Identify the special dietary needs for:
    • weight control
    • diabetes
    • cardiovascular disease
    • hypertension
    • cancer
    • lactose sensitivity
    • gluten-free
    • food allergies
    • eating disorders
  7. Identify the components of a food label.
  8. Instruct a patient regarding a change related to special dietary needs.

  2. The circulatory system: Components and function, common disorders and treatment
  3. The digestive system: Structure, components and function; common disorders and treatment
  4. Dietary nutrients, supplements, and food labels: Carbohydrates, fats, protein, minerals, electrolytes, vitamins, fiber, water
  5. Special dietary needs for weight control, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, cancer, lactose insensitivity, gluten-free, food allergies, eating disorders
  6. The respiratory system: Structure and function, common disorders and treatment
  7. The urinary system: Structure and function, common disorders and treatment
  8. The reproductive system: Structure and function, common disorders and treatment, of the reproductive system
