MEDA 110 - Human Body Structure and Function in Health & Disease I


Credits: 5
This is the first of two human structure and function courses, and it provides an introduction to cellular function, as well as the anatomy and physiology of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, neurologic, sensory, and lymphatic/immune systems. Included are common diagnostic tests and treatments for common disease processes that can affect each system.
Course Outcomes:
  1. Identify the structure and function of each component of a typical cell.
  2. Identify structural organization of the human body.
  3. Identify
    • body planes
    • directional terms
    • quadrants
    • body cavities
  4. Identify the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, neurologic, sensory, and lymphatic/immune systems of the body.
  5. For the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, neurologic, sensory, and lymphatic/immune systems of the body, identify:
    • the major organs and their anatomical location in each system
    • the normal function of each system; and
    • common pathology related to each body system, including signs, symptoms, etiology, diagnostic measures, and treatment modalities
    • medical terms and abbreviations
  6. Identify major infectious agents.
  7. Identify the infection cycle, including:
    • the infectious agent
    • reservoir
    • susceptible host
    • means of transmission
    • portals of entry
    • portals of exit

Course Topics:
  1. Terminology referring to planes, location, direction, quadrants, body cavities and sections of the human body
  2. Structure, function and components of a typical cell, and relation of cell function to larger body systems
  3. Integumentary system structure, function, common pathology, and treatment
  4. Skeletal system structure, function, common pathology, and treatment
  5. Muscular system structure, function, common pathology, and treatment
  6. Central nervous system structure, function, common pathology, and treatment
  7. Peripheral nervous system structure, function, common pathology, and treatment
  8. Location and function of sensory receptors, and ear, eye, and nose disorders and treatment
  9. Lymphatic/immune system structure, function, common pathology, and treatment
  10. Major infections agents (pathogens)
  11. The infection cycle
