ENGL 098 - Co-requisite English for ENGL& 101


Credits: 2
ENGL 098 is a course to be taken concurrently with ENGL& 101 . This course focuses on student development of structural and stylistic writing skills with a concentration on expository, critical, analytical, and persuasive essay techniques. Additionally, this course focuses on the composition of well-developed sentences, paragraphs, essays, and the writing process.
Course Outcomes:
 

  1. Produce organized, unified, coherent, and well-developed essays. 
  2. Compose well-developed, varied sentences with correct mechanics.
  3. Support rationalization of reasoning through textual evidence.
  4. Distinguish between academic and informal language.
  5. Assess source credibility through research skills, summarization, and avoiding plagiarism

Course Topics:
 

  1. The writing process.
  2. Establishing academic tone in writing.
  3. Reading for the main idea, annotating texts, and creating evidence-based claims and summaries.
  4. Finding and employing outside sources and simple formatting of in-text citations.
  5. Structuring both the paragraph and the essay, as well as employing patterns of organization.
  6. Review of grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation.
  7. Working with writing modes (narrative, expository/argumentative, persuasive).

Prerequisite(s): appropriate placement, grade of C or higher in ENGL 087 , CAP 087  or IELP 087 , or permission of the chair or designee.
