CAP 098 - Corequisite for ENGL& 101 Credits: 1-2 CAP 098 is a course to be taken concurrently with ENGL& 101. This course focuses on student development of structural and stylistic writing skills with a concentration on expository, critical, analytical, and persuasive essay techniques. Additionally, this course focuses on the composition of well-developed sentences, paragraphs, essays, and the writing process. Course Outcomes:
- Produce organized, unified, coherent, and well-developed essays.
- Compose well-developed, varied sentences with correct mechanics.
- Support rationalization of reasoning through textual evidence.
- Distinguish between academic and informal language.
- Assess source credibility through research skills, summarization, and avoiding plagiarism.
Course Topics:
- The writing process.
- Establishing academic tone in writing.
- Reading for the main idea, annotating texts, and creating evidence-based claims and summaries.
- Finding and employing outside sources and simple formatting of in-text citations.
- Structuring both the paragraph and the essay, as well as employing patterns of organization.
- Review of grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation.
- Working with writing modes (narrative, expository/argumentative, persuasive).
