CAP 098 - Corequisite for ENGL& 101

CAP 098 is a course to be taken concurrently with ENGL& 101. This course focuses on student development of structural and stylistic writing skills with a concentration on expository, critical, analytical, and persuasive essay techniques. Additionally, this course focuses on the composition of well-developed sentences, paragraphs, essays, and the writing process.
Course Outcomes:

Produce organized, unified, coherent, and well-developed essays.
Compose well-developed, varied sentences with correct mechanics.
Support rationalization of reasoning through textual evidence.
Distinguish between academic and informal language.
Assess source credibility through research skills, summarization, and avoiding plagiarism.

Course Topics:

The writing process.
Establishing academic tone in writing.
Reading for the main idea, annotating texts, and creating evidence-based claims and summaries.
Finding and employing outside sources and simple formatting of in-text citations.
Structuring both the paragraph and the essay, as well as employing patterns of organization.
Review of grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation.
Working with writing modes (narrative, expository/argumentative, persuasive).
