MUSC& 143 - Music Theory III

Credits: 5
The study of music logic, music theory, is intended to complement the musical intuition most vocalists and instrumentalists already have. Music is a complex and highly organized art, whether it is a Mozart concerto or a jack improvisation. While providing a rational knowledge of music through the study of basic musical concepts and terminology, including analysis, composition, ear-training and sight singing, a study of music theory interacts with the musician’s intuition, bringing a deeper understanding and appreciation of music. All students will learn to apply their knowledge to the keyboard in a basic though useful way.
Course Outcomes:
  1. Critically analyze music with increasing mastery.
  2. Recognize aurally and notate all seventh chords.
  3. Demonstrate harmonic progression, aurally and notationally.
  4. Analyze and notate tonicization and modulation of chords.
  5. Analyze through-composed musical scores as well as jazz-based lead sheets.
  6. Perform piano improvisations employing basic harmonic progressions, scales, and modes.

Course Topics:
  1. The Structural Elements of Music:
    • Advanced harmonic progression
    • Seventh chords: dominant, leading-tone, non-dominant
    • Secondary dominant and leading-tone chords
