AGSC 202 - Soils Fertility and Management

Credits: 5
Study of macro- and micronutrient uptake and utilization by plants and the fertilizer products used to supply different nutrients.
Course Outcomes:

  1. Describe the physical processes involved in soil erosion and how to mitigate it.
  2. Diagram the nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and sulfur cycles to include identification of all nutrient forms.
  3. Predict the relative mobility in the soil and in the plant of nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, and potassium.
  4. Discuss the interaction between nitrogen/sulfer and pH/micronutrients in the soil.
  5. Identify common fertilizer products and considerations for usage of each.
  6. Calculate the cost of fertilizer applications.
  7. Recognize common nutrient deficiency symptoms.
  8. Analyze soil test reports to make fertilizer, amendment, and organic material management recommendations for a given production system and location.

Course Topics:

  1. Ion Exchange and Soil pH
  2. Soil Erosion, Classification and Survey
  3. Soil and Fertilizer Nitrogen
  4. Soil and Fertilizer Phosphorous and Potassium
  5. Sulfur and Soil Micronutrients
  6. Fertilizers and Fertilizer Use and Management
  7. Animal Manures and Other Organic Sources of Nutrients
