AHSE 148 - The Navigator Skills


Credits: 1
This course defines the scope of practice of the patient navigator and how a navigator’s skills relate to health maintenance, disease prevention, compliance with treatment plan, community resources, and adaptations relevant to patient needs. The principles of motivational interviewing are introduced. This is the seventh course of a seven-course series.
Course Outcomes:
  1. Define the scope of practice of a patient navigator.
  2. Apply principles of personal and professional boundaries to the practice of patient navigation.
  3. Demonstrate patient advocacy.
  4. Demonstrate motivational interviewing and Teach Back techniques.
  5. Apply the principles of coaching to promote behavior change.

  2. Documentation of patient encounters
  3. Managing conflict and building trust through communication
  4. Prioritizing work with multiple complex patients
  5. Developing a personal plan for self-care
  6. Case studies
