AHSE 145 - The Whole Patient Credits: 1 This course introduces the whole patient concept and how cultural competency impacts access to the healthcare system. This is the fourth course of a seven-course series. Course Outcomes:
- Define healthcare disparities.
- Identify social determinants of health.
- Describe how culture and bias affect patient interpretation of illness and interaction with the healthcare system.
- Discuss how social and cultural barriers to health care can be reduced.
- Discuss the impact of cultural literacy on patient understanding and knowledge of the healthcare system.
Course Topics:
- Social determinants of health and health care disparities
- Cultural practices and world views applicable to patient navigation
- Reduction of social and cultural barriers to care
- Impact of cultural literacy on plan of care (POC) and access
- Importance of accepting personal responsibility for valuing, encouraging, and supporting differences
