ANSC 112 - Feeds and Feeding

Addresses common feeding practices and nutrient characteristics of animal feeds.
Course Outcomes:
 
  1. Recognize the major nutrients and the role each of the nutrients plays in animal nutrition.
  2. Describe basic functions of digestion systems for monogastric and ruminant animals.
  3. Analyze various types of livestock feed.
  4. Predict the relative levels of nutrients that common feeds contain.
  5. Analyze required nutrients for livestock.
  6. Employ knowledge of balancing rations for different species including multiple methods and nutrients.
  7. Assemble comprehensive feeding strategies for profitable livestock enterprise management.

  1. Terminology of feed composition: Proximate analysis, measures of feed energy, units of measure of vitamins and minerals, voluntary feed intake
  2. Ration balancing, substitution and fix ingredients
  3. Beef cattle nutrition
  4. Feedlot nutrition
  5. Growth stimulants
  6. Swine nutrition
  7. Horse nutrition
  8. Dairy nutrition
