ART& 100 - Art Appreciation

An introduction to the history, vocabulary, purposes, themes, styles, methods, and materials of art.
Course Outcomes:
  1. Explain and apply major terms, vocabulary, methods, concepts, and theories relevant to art of different cultures and time periods.
  2. Identify a variety of art media and artistic choices.
  3. Differentiate purposes and functions of art and artists in history.
  4. Recognize a variety of themes and styles in art.
  5. Demonstrate ethical and responsible use of media and information.

Course Topics:
  1. Art vocabulary - includes the elements of line, shape, value, color, texture, space, and scale; and the principles of contrast, variety, repetition, balance, unity, and proportion
  2. Art media - drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media, performance, installation, architecture, etc.
  3. Ethical and responsible use of media and information
  4. Application of art vocabulary to historical and contemporary artworks
  5. Themes in art such as survival, religion/spirituality, human representation, politics, science, social justice, etc.
  6. Artistic choices and their relationship to the viewer
