ART& 100 - Art Appreciation Credits: 5 An introduction to the history, vocabulary, purposes, themes, styles, methods, and materials of art. Course Outcomes:
- Explain and apply major terms, vocabulary, methods, concepts, and theories relevant to art of different cultures and time periods.
- Identify a variety of art media and artistic choices.
- Differentiate purposes and functions of art and artists in history.
- Recognize a variety of themes and styles in art.
- Demonstrate ethical and responsible use of media and information.
Course Topics:
- Art vocabulary - includes the elements of line, shape, value, color, texture, space, and scale; and the principles of contrast, variety, repetition, balance, unity, and proportion
- Art media - drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media, performance, installation, architecture, etc.
- Ethical and responsible use of media and information
- Application of art vocabulary to historical and contemporary artworks
- Themes in art such as survival, religion/spirituality, human representation, politics, science, social justice, etc.
- Artistic choices and their relationship to the viewer
