BIOL& 241 - Human Anatomy & Physiology I

Credits: 5
This course is the first of a two-quarter sequence that studies the structure and function of the human body. This course is intended for nursing and health science majors in fulfillment of the lab science requirements. Topics include introduction to the human body, histology, the skeletal, muscular, nervous, and the digestive systems. Laboratory work may include mammalian dissections, online simulations, model study, and microscopy.
Course Outcomes:
  1. Identify and describe the makeup, microscopic structure, and classification of major body tissues.
  2. Use anatomical terminology to identify and describe the location and orientation of structures, body cavities, surface anatomy regions, and major body movements in the human body.
  3. Identify and describe the anatomical structures of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous and digestive systems of the human body.
  4. Describe the major mechanisms and processes necessary for the normal functioning of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, and digestive systems.
  5. Provide examples of the effects of different diseases on the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, and digestive systems.
  6. Explain the relationship between structure and function using examples related to the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, and digestive systems.
  7. Describe how different body systems contribute to the homeostasis of common internal variables.
  8. Demonstrate the proper use of dissection tools, models, and microscopes in analyzing and identifying biological structures.

Course Topics:
  1. Introduction to the human body, histology, the skeletal, muscular, nervous, and the digestive systems.
  2. Laboratory work may include mammalian dissections, online simulations, model study, and microscopy.
