BIOL& 100 - Survey of Biology


Credits: 5
This lab science course was developed around central themes in contemporary biology and emphasizes ecology, genetics, evolution and the diversity of life. This course is primarily intended for undecided or non-science majors in fulfillment of the general education lab science requirements. Through units on cells, plants, and animals the characteristics of living organisms and basic life processes will be illustrated. Topics will include discussions of recent advances in biology and the problems incurred.
Course Outcomes:
 

  1. Apply major terms, methods and concepts relevant to biology.
  2. Analyze new and existing situations using biological principles.
  3. Explain current issues in society and examine their relationship to biology.
  4. Analyze biological problems using the principles of the scientific method, including observation, hypotheses and testing predictions.
  5. Integrate biological facts and processes related to evolution and genetics.
  6. Evaluate basic relationships between structure and function at all levels: molecular, cellular, and organismal.
  7. Use laboratory equipment safely and with technical skill.
