AUDIO 113 - Audio Recording III

Credits: 4
LEC hours per week: 2
LAB hours per week: 4
This course serves as the culmination of the program, and therefore, students integrate the knowledge and skills they have developed throughout their studies. Students will set up, record, and mix multitracking sessions, using internal and external dynamics in the recording and mixing processes. They will print stems and a stereo track and add the final set of microphones to their microphone books. Beyond specific audio engineering outcomes, students must also demonstrate effective communication skills with (potential) clients and the public through authentic scenarios engaging with the community to evaluate needs and propose solutions for real-world sound problems and troubleshoot issues that arise.
Course Outcomes:
  • Set up mixing console for simultaneous recording of multiple audio signals.
  • Apply EQ, compression, and audio FX to multiple audio sources during recording and mixing process.
  • Print individual audio tracks and final mix in stereo in various audio formats.
  • Capture and recall recording and mixing setting on the mixing console for the session.
  • Communicate understanding of audio engineering needs and solutions by presenting credible, relevant evidence from a variety of reliable sources selected to support the proposal.
  • Analyze, integrate, and apply knowledge from multiple points of view, interacting effectively with people who are different from them to develop and disseminate solutions despite those differences.
  • Articulate and implement a solution an audio engineering issue, transferring knowledge and skills to new, complex situations, based on evaluation of multiple strategies, resources, and evidence.
Course Topics:
  1. Multitracking recording session prep.
  2. Channel inputs and outputs for digital audio workstation and mixing console for recording and mixing.
  3. Audio source placement for recording.
  4. Channel labeling for recording.
  5. Printing audio stems in WAV and MP3 format.
  6. Printing audio stems with and without audio processing and FX.
