ESTM 225 - Hydraulics and Pneumatics

Credits: 5
LEC hours per week: 3
LAB hours per week: 4
Explores the basic principles of hydraulic and pneumatic systems, industry terminology, mechanical symbols, system components, energy and personal safety, completing calculations, review of operations and maintenance. Formerly: EST 159.
Course Outcomes:
  • Identify the differences between hydraulic and pneumatic systems and equipment.
  • Identify and protect themselves from the safety hazards related to hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Evaluate the various types of pneumatic compressors and hydraulic pumps.
  • Compare and contrast fluid flow with fluid pressure.
  • Describe ways to keep moisture and contaminants out of pneumatic systems.
  • Draw the basic hydraulic and pneumatic circuit symbols and describe the component’s function.
  • Calculate the force and velocity of a hydraulic cylinder.
  • Describe the function of AND, OR, NOT pneumatic logic elements.
  • Design basic hydraulic and pneumatic systems using blueprint symbols then assemble and operate the systems.
  • Compare and contrast Positive displacement pumps with dynamic pumps.
  • Calculate and differentiate between static head and dynamic head.
  • Use pump curves and system curves to determine pressures and flowrates for a dynamic system.
  • Replace mechanical seals on centrifugal pumps.
