ESTM 225 - Hydraulics and Pneumatics Credits: 5 LEC hours per week: 3 LAB hours per week: 4 Explores the basic principles of hydraulic and pneumatic systems, industry terminology, mechanical symbols, system components, energy and personal safety, completing calculations, review of operations and maintenance. Formerly: EST 159. Course Outcomes:
- Identify the differences between hydraulic and pneumatic systems and equipment.
- Identify and protect themselves from the safety hazards related to hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Evaluate the various types of pneumatic compressors and hydraulic pumps.
- Compare and contrast fluid flow with fluid pressure.
- Describe ways to keep moisture and contaminants out of pneumatic systems.
- Draw the basic hydraulic and pneumatic circuit symbols and describe the component’s function.
- Calculate the force and velocity of a hydraulic cylinder.
- Describe the function of AND, OR, NOT pneumatic logic elements.
- Design basic hydraulic and pneumatic systems using blueprint symbols then assemble and operate the systems.
- Compare and contrast Positive displacement pumps with dynamic pumps.
- Calculate and differentiate between static head and dynamic head.
- Use pump curves and system curves to determine pressures and flowrates for a dynamic system.
- Replace mechanical seals on centrifugal pumps.
