ESTM 220 - Industrial Mechanics Credits: 5 LEC hours per week: 4 LAB hours per week: 2 This course addresses the needs of the multi-crafted maintenance technician and presents an all-encompassing view of the field of industrial maintenance, which covers a variety of technical skill areas. These include, but are not limited to safety, mechanical installation, fasteners and torque, fluid power, piping systems, power transmission, shaft alignment, vibration analysis, and print reading. Formerly: EST 115. Course Outcomes:
- Discuss and use personal protective equipment and best practices for workplace safety.
- Use hand and power tools safely and demonstrate to others how to use tools correctly and safely.
- Identify the different types and classifications of fasteners, including bolts, nuts, screws and retaining rings. And correctly use taps and dies for threaded fastener installation.
- Read and interpret mechanical prints to assemble mechanical systems.
- Identify the particular parts, systems, and formulas for mechanical power transmission, including: belts and sheaves, chains and sprockets, gears and gearboxes.
- Calculate loads and speeds for gear-drive, chain-drive and belt-drive systems.
- Identify the different types of mechanical bearings and their applications.
- Align coupled shafts with dial indicators, laser alignment tools, feeler gages, and reverse dial indicator method.
- Discuss and apply lubrication principles.
- Identify the different types of seals, packing, and their installation.
- Use vibration analysis tools to analyze machine and bearing condition.
