ESTM 144 - Industrial Safety & Material Handling Credits: 5 LEC hours per week: 4 LAB hours per week: 2 This course provides students with training and practice to develop competencies in industrial safety and material handling. Students will be trained in the safe operation of industrial fork lifts and aerial lifts (not all sites). Students will complete OSHA-10 general and construction training modules (third party certification not provided). Students will complete additional workplace safety modules to develop personal and equipment safety skills and knowledge in an industrial environment. Techniques for safely lifting and moving loads of various shapes, sizes, and types with an overhead crane will be covered and opportunities for practice provided. Also covered is tooling, hand and radio signals, safety around equipment, and equipment operation. Formerly: EST 145. Course Outcomes:
- Practice standard operating and safety procedures in the classroom, labs, and workplace.
- Determine and use procedures that ensure the health and safety of personnel in a variety of situations.
- Recognize work site hazards and plan for an emergency situation.
- Use effective communication skills in the workplace.
- Use Lock Out Tag Out procedures, Arc Flash and Personal Protection Equipment, and Confined Space Entry procedures.
- Interpret Hazard Communication, Safety Data Sheets, and blood borne pathogen guidelines.
- Use tools, hooks, and eyebolts according to industry standards.
- Determine and use center-of-gravity for safely lifting various objects.
- Explain an application of each of the seven common knots tied for rigging.
- Use slings, chains, spreader beams, wire and fiber rope, block and tackle, manual and power-operated hoists to move materials and equipment.
- Inspect and operate crane, hoists and motorized industrial lift truck in a safe manner.
- Inspect and operate scissor lift and z-boom lift in a safe manner to industry specifications.
- Maneuver a Crane and/or a Telehandler using verbal and hand signals.
