AHSE 170 - Workplace Violence Prevention and Safety for Healthcare Professionals Credits: 1 LEC hours per week: 0.900 LAB hours per week: 0.200 This course is designed for healthcare professionals facing the ever increasing risk of workplace violence. Risk factors and common settings for workplace violence will be presented. Using case scenarios, interactive training on effective, evidence-based, verbal de-escalation techniques will be taught. Practical advice and safety skills will be presented to assist the learning to better protect and advocate for their safety in the healthcare work environment. Criminal laws that protect healthcare professionals from assault will be discussed and physical self-defense techniques will be demonstrated. Formerly: HO 170. Course Outcomes:
- Identify risk factors and common settings for violence in the healthcare setting.
- Describe strategies that healthcare professionals can use to maintain a safe working environment and prevent workplace violence.
- Demonstrate effective verbal de-escalation techniques to decrease possible workplace violence.
- Use basic self-defense techniques that can protect a healthcare professional from assault.
- Describe criminal laws that protect healthcare professionals from assault in the workplace.
- Identify resources for victims of workplace violence.
