AHSE 169 - Suicide Prevention Training Credits: 0.6 LEC hours per week: 0.6 This interactive course is for healthcare professionals responsible for the care and safety of those patients/clients at elevated risk for suicidal behaviors in all settings and across the age span. The course includes training in best practices for the assessment and management of adult, youth and/or veteran suicide risk as required by WA State DOH & WAC regulation. Six clock hours of continuing education credit may be obtained upon completion. Formerly: HO 169. Course Outcomes:
- Define best practices in suicide risk assessment by healthcare professionals.
- Use correct terminology to clearly communicate danger to patient safety or patient harm.
- Document in a clear and concise manner a patient’s suicide risk potential.
- Demonstrate (or describe) empathetic interview techniques used to reduce acute distress and hopelessness in a suicidal patient.
- Identify three factors that place the special population of veterans at a higher risk for suicide.
- Compare and contrast the lethality of objects, substances, and actions commonly used in suicide attempts.
- Given a case study, identify five protective measures that the healthcare professional could implement to prevent harm in a suicidal patient.
