AGSC 202 - Soils Fertility and Management Credits: 5 LEC hours per week: 5 Study of macro- and micronutrient uptake and utilization by plants and the fertilizer products used to supply different nutrients. Formerly: AGPR 202. Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or higher in AGSC 201 or instructor permission. Course Outcomes:
- Describe the physical processes involved in soil erosion and how to mitigate it.
- Diagram the nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and sulfur cycles to include identification of all nutrient forms.
- Predict the relative mobility in the soil and in the plant of nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, and potassium.
- Discuss the interaction between nitrogen/sulfer and pH/micronutrients in the soil.
- Identify common fertilizer products and considerations for usage of each.
- Calculate the cost of fertilizer applications.
- Recognize common nutrient deficiency symptoms.
- Analyze soil test reports to make fertilizer, amendment, and organic material management recommendations for a given production system and location.
Course Topics:
- Ion Exchange and Soil pH
- Soil Erosion, Classification and Survey
- Soil and Fertilizer Nitrogen
- Soil and Fertilizer Phosphorous and Potassium
- Sulfur and Soil Micronutrients
- Fertilizers and Fertilizer Use and Management
