AHSE 145 - The Whole Patient

This course introduces the whole patient concept and how cultural competency impacts access to the healthcare system. This is the fourth course of a seven-course series. Formerly: HO 146.
Course Outcomes:
  • Define healthcare disparities.
  • Identify social determinants of health.
  • Describe how culture and bias affect patient interpretation of illness and interaction with the healthcare system.
  • Discuss how social and cultural barriers to health care can be reduced.
  • Discuss the impact of cultural literacy on patient understanding and knowledge of the healthcare system.
Course Topics:

  1. Social determinants of health and health care disparities
  2. Cultural practices and world views applicable to patient navigation
  3. Reduction of social and cultural barriers to care
  4. Impact of cultural literacy on plan of care (POC) and access
  5. Importance of accepting personal responsibility for valuing, encouraging, and supporting differences
